Week 3 of the bear season found me with many baits not hunted,
lots of bears around and some time on my hands. I
convinced a good friend of mine Dave Blood to come up for an
abbreviated bear hunt with me, as he was short on time.
Dave planned on traveling up on Saturday, hunting Monday and
Tuesday and leaving Wednesday for his home in Vermont.
While Dave was on the road I was sitting on a bait myself and
another friend Scott Colcord was hoping for his first bear kill
on a different bait. It was a very warm afternoon, but the
conditions were good with a slight breeze that died right off by
sunset. After 4 1/2 long hours in my blind I heard a
rustling behind me. About 10 minutes later the bear was on the
bait. I watched it for a while and decided I would take
it. I squeezed the trigger and it fell. I gathered
up my gear and headed out to check on Scott.
I found Scott sitting by the edge of the road, so I knew he had shot a bear as well. We decided to go get mine out first, and then look for his. Back at the lodge, Dave was eating lobster but chomping at the bit to get out to see all the action. I had called my wife to let her know what was going on, and Dave was excited. I soon had to call home again and have her and Dave drive out to meet Scott and I as we would need some help. Scott shot a huge sow that was round as she was long. What a porker. Between Dave, Scott and myself we dragged Scott's bear out to the truck and headed back to the lodge. After some photo's on Sunday, Scott headed back to his family with his first black bear. Dave and I headed out to the range so he could try my rifle, as he would be using it the next day to hunt with. We could hardly wait for Monday to get here. I got Dave in stand early as the bears seemed to be coming in early. This day was very hot and humid. I decided to just sit in my truck where I could hear Dave shoot. Soon I heard the shot and got on the radio and confirmed he had fired at a bear. I sped off to the bait and then began looking for blood. It took a while to find the bear, but it was a nice bear and a good shot. Sometimes bears just do not bleed much. Dave and I headed back to the lodge with his first Maine bear. This week ended with 3 hunters taking 3 bears with 3 shots. The end of a great season with plenty of bears left for you.
