When the second group of hunters for 2002 arrived in camp, I knew we were in for a good week.  The group consisted of Lucky Streich, Gary Ramsey and his nephew Jason Ramsey, Dan Reukauf and his friend NancyRowley, Mike Lewis, Casey Heaster, and Dr. Mark Pope.  Everyone arrived in camp around noon on Sunday for their lobster feed and orientation.  After the orientation we went to the rifle range to be sure everything was sighted in.  At the range I presented Gary with an ancient Penobscot Indian bear hunting charm for good luck.

Everyone was pumped for a good week.  I got the guys out to their stands, with the last person out being Lucky.  While checking some bait sites that we were not yet hunting I heard a shot, but was unsure if it was Gary or Dr. Pope.  It turned out to be Gary who had taken a beautiful bear around 4 p.m.  After Gary and I got his bear out I learned via cell phone that Lucky had arrowed a bear as well.  Gary and I headed in to find Lucky pacing the ground waiting for us.  We picked up the blood at the bait site and went 30 or 40 yards through some thick cover to find a large boar with a nice white blaze on its chest.  Lucky made a perfect shot on the bear.  We left that bear there after we dressed it off, because we would need some help getting him out.

I then went to check on the rest of the hunters and pick them up.  I learned that Dan had seen a nice bear early on, but wasn't ready for it, Mike saw a bear on his site that did not present a shot, Dr. Pope saw 2 bears on his bait and passed them up, Jason had seen 2 bears on his bait and Casey had seen 3 bears and shot one.  We retrieved Casey's bear and headed back with the whole gang to get Lucky's bruiser.  On day one we had 100% sightings and 3 tags filled.  What a day!

When Tuesday arrived it was a rainy one.  I got the 4 remaining hunters out to their baits for a damp afternoon in the Maine woods.  It was quiet until around 5:50 p.m. when Mark killed a bear on his bait.  Mark and I got it to the truck and then picked up the others.  The only other action was Jason had seen the same 2 bears and Mike had a cow moose right under his stand.

Wednesday arrived with us with 3 tags left to fill.  That day I had a helper with me for the afternoon, Seth Reed.  Seth had shot his second bear in as many years on Monday and wanted to help me bait.  Our first bit of action was around 5:30 p.m. when we went to help Dan find his bear.  After a bit of tracking we recovered the bear and got it out to the truck.  Dan had seen a total of 4 bears that day.  We then met up with the guys who had already filled their tags, but were anxious to see how things were going.  Soon we learned that Jason had shot his first bear.  Jason and I had seen another bear when we went into the bait in the morning, but we were not ready for it. We recovered Jason's bear and now we were waiting on Mike.  Soon Lucky and I headed in to Mike's bait with him to look for his bear that he had arrowed.  There was very little blood, so we decided to look for it  in the morning.

When we arrived in the morning and fanned out, it wasn't 5 minutes and Gary spotted Mike's large boar.  We got some photo's and headed back to camp with our 7th and final bear for the week.  We had shot 7 bears, with 7 shots and had seen 24 bears with 7 hunters in 3 days.  We now had lots of photos to take and many bears to skin and process.  What a week of bear hunting!
